Chemical Strengthening of Ultra-Thin Glass for Use as Cover Window of Flexible Displays

The recent commercial success of foldable smartphones is indebted in part to integration ultra-thin glass (UTG) into the flexible display modules. To endow with such a foldability, while keeping its merits over polymeric materials, tons complicated issues need be resolved addition thickness reduction. Since UTG subjected repeated deformations during service as cover window, extra care required minimize microcracks whole preparation process. Here, it noteworthy that chemical strengthening via ion exchange should performed for better durability. In this article, after briefly reviewing current status terms production and process, highlighted viable option further innovate functionalities. A new ion-exchange technique which not adopting molten-salt-bath proposed, some experimental demonstrations exemplifying concept ‘actively stress-managed glass’ are delineated.
